This practical course helps you understand how competence standards connect to safe vessel operations, crew assignments, emergency readiness, and inspection preparation. It is designed to build regulatory awareness without replacing flag-state instructions, company procedures, or formal training approved by an administration.
You will explore the structure of the Convention and STCW Code, including mandatory standards, recommended guidance, competence tables, levels of responsibility, certificates of competency, certificates of proficiency, endorsements, sea service, and revalidation. The course also examines foundational safety and security training, department-specific certification routes, GMDSS personnel, specialized vessel training, hours of rest, and fitness-for-duty considerations.
Starting with core terminology, you will progress to practical verification and onboard implementation. Work through realistic situations involving pre-joining certificate checks, vessel-specific competence matrices, familiarization, drills, assessment evidence, expiry tracking, and documentation gaps.
